About Stardust Sustainable Bags
“Summers during college I worked on a tree farm where we would hand dig trees, burlap the root balls and tie them with jute rope. I thought it was pretty cool the burlap and jute was strong enough to hold together a 2,000-pound root ball yet would biodegrade in about 9 weeks. I thought there must be other uses for such a strong, earth friendly fiber. I tucked that thought aside, completed a degree in horticulture at Virginia Tech and ran a landscape architecture firm for 35 years. I had been retired for about a week and was reading about how plastic bags were destroying our ecosystem and it hit me! Why not make shopping bags from jute fiber?
We bought a garage full of bags and started selling them at farmers markets, gift shops and local grocery stores. Then we began getting requests from businesses, churches and organizations to make custom bags. Our bags can be found in stores throughout the American West and now we are branching out to other areas of the country.
Our name was inspired by Joni Mitchell’s song Woodstock. This song was somewhat of an anthem for my generation and I have always felt a special connection with it. I am very proud to produce an earth-friendly bag that literally returns ‘back to the garden’.

What We Thought
First things first I love a good product that starts as an idea here in my home state of Virginia! Some would say I am not very well traveled but I think that where I live is perfect and I have very few desires to go much further. I do have a bucket list though and have marked quite a few places off.
Stardust Sustainable Bags sent us a few bags to try out and immediately I had this idea come to mind. Why give Valentine’s Day gifts in bags that will just get tossed in the garbage? Why keep contributing to the huge amount of waste that this country has and give someone something they can use over and over to become more sustainable. These bags were absolutely perfect for that the ideas for ways they can be reused is endless. I have thought of everything from groceries to library books.
The sentiments on each one are perfect. The “love where you live” idea touched me because I truly do love where I live. I love the life we have here and the small town feeling that our community still has.
These bags are durable and will be filled with goodies for those we love this Valentine’s Day and I know that especially my parents will use theirs over and over since they are within walking distance of their favorite place to shop. This will be perfect to fill with goods and head back to the comfort of their home.
I love that these are affordable and durable to stand the test of time. I am giving some to my boys because they need new bags for their library books and of course our many upcoming trips to the summer farmer’s market. This awesome company even has a beach bag size for less than $30!
